Step 1

Boil a kettle and leave this to sit for around 30 seconds.

Step 2

To figure out the capacity of your cafetière, fill it to just below the spout with water and pour this into a measuring jug.

Step 3

Round this up to a whole number, and use a ratio of 60g of coffee to a litre. As ours is a 1 litre cafetière, we’re using 60g of coarse-grind coffee.

Step 4

Pour your required amount of just off boiling water into your cafetière.

Step 5

Allow your coffee to brew for 4 minutes.

Step 6

A crust should have formed on the top of the coffee. Stir through this and allow the ground coffee to sink to the bottom of the cafetière over another 4 minutes.

Step 7

Meanwhile, use a spoon to remove the crema from the top of the coffee to get rid of any unwanted bitterness.

Step 8

Place your plunger over your cafetière but do not plunge.

Step 9

This is best used as a filter to pour your coffee through.

Step 10

As you continue to pour, cup by cup, push the plunger down to the level of liquid coffee without plunging.
